Ant Control
Ant control is a common pest control service provided by the Pest Control Pros. This is because ants enjoy the sunny, relatively dry climate of the West Coast. It is the perfect environment for the Pharaohs and Black ants (which are the most common species found) to thrive in. As homeowners, we would like to exterminate ants mainly because they are a nuisance, however, Pharaohs ants can also carry disease. Residences with an ant problem often find ants infesting all types of food stuffs, especially sweet foods.
Ants mark their routes using pheromones which is why they walk in straight lines. If these pheromones are disturbed, the ants which are unable to find their way back to the nest will look to start a new colony elsewhere. Pest control specialists should be contacted when trying to exterminate ants as the incorrect treatment can see a second colony forming and their numbers doubling.
Signs of an Ant Problem
Typical indications of an ant problem include:
- Ants seen foraging for food both indoors or outside to take back to their nest.
- Heaps or mounds of sand found on lawns or pavements is often caused by an ant problem. These heaps are formed by ants pushing soil out of the ground to expand their nest.
- Ants seen entering or exiting their nest which is usually a hole in the ground.
Why the need for Ant Control?
Typically, a Black Ant problem does not cause severe structural damage to properties and are more of a nuisance when infesting foods. However, ant control is needed where large numbers are found. Damage to paving and brickwork is caused when ants remove sand to expand their nest. Lawns and plants can also be adversely affected.
Pharaoh ants are known to carry disease-organisms on their exoskeleton as they are found in refuse areas, sewers and drains. Therefore, an ant problem is considered serious in hospitals or healthcare facilities. A less common ant problem is a red fire ant infestation. These ants have a sting which can endanger infants, bedridden individuals, or confined pets.
Ant Control Technique
Only a relatively small percentage (about 5-10%) of the ant colony is seen foraging, the rest remain in the nest. Therefore, a residual spray to treat an ant problem has little to no effect.
We, unlike some pest control companies, advise on two treatments for effective control. During the first treatment, we lay bait which the ants take into their nest and distribute among the colony. In this way, the behaviour of the ants works against them.
For the second treatment, we use a high-pressure pump to inject the nests with a pesticide. This method is similar to a termite control treatment and will exterminate ants which never consumed the original baits. A residual spray as well as gel bait can also be used in the second treatment if the ant problem is severe.
